So, today is my birthday. Yep. For real. I’m owning all 56 years of being me; mom, wife, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, friend, taxi driver, chef, house cleaner, personal assistant, and…you get the idea. This day comes and then it goes. As moms, we're hoping for a small remembrance from the little people (and the big ones) we’ve nurtured & supported throughout the years. Sometimes though, with all the activity where one day leads into another, it’s shall we say, postponed for a little while. It happens. Generally, this is when the kids are young and you’re so busy that you don’t notice which day it is other than, is it soccer or baseball or swimming lessons or a combination of the 3 and who’s taking which kid where. Being a parent means being busy a lot of the time and forgetting about some of the other adults in the room. For instance, if you’re old enough to remember the John Hughes movie “Sixteen Candles,” then there is probably a time that you remember when you would have been able to empathize with feeling like the film’s lead, Samantha, whose family forgot her 16th birthday. Some years, you’re wondering when the kids will remember or you’re waiting for your husband to remind them. Other years, they’re doing it on purpose just to see how far they can stretch it out before you lose it. Again, it all depends on the age. And that’s the age of the kids, not the husband! I’ve had a lot of years to think about what I really want on my birthday and generally the things on my list, a lot of the time, were not something anyone in my family had even thought of. Granted some of these ideas are for when the kids are little, but some are just as relevant as they get older too. And it’s generally not about material things, although that doesn’t mean I’d give back earrings and necklace, but you'll definitely be able to find one or two things in the list below no matter what stage of parenting you're at.
But after all is said and done, when you strip away material things, you’re left with memories. And memories are the luxury properties of the realm of motherhood. Create a few more of those because those are the greatest gifts!
